This interferometry technique also makes it possible to distinguish the “exo-zodiacal” light produced by the dust grains from the powerful radiation of the star. What was the result of this? According to Olivier Absil, “Nearly 20% of stars that are similar to the Sun contain hot dust near or inside the habitable zone; this fraction increases to 30% when stars that are up to two times hotter, such as Vega, are included in the sample”. Exo-zodiacal light is therefore a relatively common phenomenon in solar-type systems and must be taken into account in future space programs dedicated to the direct detection of exoplanets.
