The Saint-Géry îlot
|
The Saint-Géry block in Brussels is bounded by the Place Saint-Géry and these streets: rue de la Grande Île, rue des Riches Claires, rue Saint-Christophe et rue Plétinckx. It is considered to be the historic “cradle” of Brussels. The houses were built when there still existed a tributary of the Senne that at one time encircled the Grande Ile. The Riches Claires (a group of women devoted to religion) in 1343 built a convent with buildings organized around the former garden of a cloister. The current church of Riches Claires was completed in 1680.
The most recent major renovations in the Saint-Géry block date from 1985-88, and they featured a high level of care in restoring the historical framework, while creating a residential environment that was provided with modern comforts. |
